(Marion County)—The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a possible scam targeting young people who are applying for federal education grants.

Deputies say scammers contacted a young person in the Palmyra area and identified themselves as federal loan representatives.  The victim revealed her banking and debit card information thinking the request was related to a loan application she had applied for earlier in the year.  A caller asked her to purchase a green dot card for $250 and then call back with the information and $9,000 would be deposited to her bank account.  Officials at the Department of Education confirm this was a scam and the contact numbers are not valid.
