Several Illinois communities were devastated by a series of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes that ripped through the region on November 17. Hundreds sustained injuries during the tornadoes, at least eight people lost their lives, and the property damage has been catastrophic. The tornadoes led Illinois Governor Pat Quinn to declare disaster areas in seven counties. On January 15, an exhibition hockey game - featuring former St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks players - will raise funds for the victims of November's tornadoes.

Skate Strong is being organized in Peoria. The Peoria Journal-Star says the game will be at 7 p.m. on January 15 at the Peoria Civic Center's Carver Arena, home of the Peoria Rivermen. A minimum $10 donation at the door is being requested for admission. Doors will open at 6 p.m. An auction for player jerseys will follow the game. Proceeds will be distributed by the Salvation Army Tornado Relief Fund.

The game format will feature two thirty-minute periods, with one twenty-minute intermission in between. Fans will be allowed to get autographs during the game and participate in a 50/50 drawing.

Rock to the Rescue, a benefit concert featuring REO Speedwagon, Styx, Richard Marx, Ted Nugent and others, generated approximately $300,000 for tornado relief early in December.
