A Missouri judge has appointed a special prosecutor to review the deadly shooting of an armed suspect by a Boone County sheriff's deputy in a gunfight earlier this year.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports Boone County prosecutor Dan Knight recused himself from the case because of his office's close relationship with the deputy who killed Cornelius Parker on Feb. 28.

Circuit Judge Christine Carpenter on Wednesday appointed Callaway County prosecuting attorney Chris Wilson as special prosecutor.

The deputy shot the 28-year-old Parker during a gunfight near Columbia after Parker shot three people, killing two. The deputy recently returned to regular duty after spending time on administrative duties.

The 32-year-old deputy is an 11-year veteran of the department who also is a firearms instructor.
