Bat enthusiasts from all over the country are in Hannibal this weekend for the dedication of what has become the city’s second largest park.

Federal, state and local officials, including Assistant Secretary of the Interior Michael Bean, took part in the dedication Friday of the Sodalis Nature Preserve.

Sodalis features recreational trails and is the site of the former Lime Kiln Mines, which now serve as a habitat for a number of different breeds of bats.

The former mines serve as the hibernating home of some 168,000 Indiana bats, which is about a third of all the Indiana bats in the world.

Activities continue Saturday with the Batfest at the Admiral Coontz Recreation Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
