Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford has officially announced he's running for the Republican nomination in the 2014 governor's race. The 58-year-old Rutherford plans to spread his message on a three-day statewide tour that includes stops in Chicago, Springfield and Rockford. He says he wants to eliminate the state's "massive debt," fund its liabilities and help create jobs.

The Republican is scheduled to visit supporters in Springfield, Marion, Cahokia, Quincy and Milan today. Rutherford is a former state lawmaker who will likely face a crowded GOP field.
