Ride Cool Helmet Safety Event Coming to Hannibal

If the weather were cooperating by now it would already be bike riding season. We are sure however that’s it’s going to be soon, so this is an event you won’t want to miss.

Hannibal Clinic Health Services will be holding “Ride Cool” on Saturday, May 18 on the campus on the Hannibal Clinic from 10am to noon. Toddlers through kids age 12 can bring their bikes and skateboards and enjoy a safe place to ride plus an obstacle course, bike inspections, a gear wash and giveaways.

The bike team from Cool Byke will also give a demonstration and perform tricks. Dr. Justin Bubolz, Pediatrician with The Hannibal Clinic will also be doing a safety helmet demonstration.

More than 500,000 people each year are treated in emergency rooms and more than 700 die as a result of bicycle-related injuries. Children are particularly at risk. Nearly half of children ages 14 and under hospitalized for bicycle-related injuries are diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury and riders who don’t wear helmets are 14 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than those who do. Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of injury by as much as 85%.

The event at The Hannibal Clinic is sponsored in part by KHMO, WLIQ, Y-101 and KICK-FM.
