A Ralls County man was killed Tuesday morning while doing bridge work.

WGEM reports that 37 year old Jason Cook was part of a crew working on the Griffin Hollow Road Bridge when he was struck by a steel beam.

According to Ralls County Presiding Commissioner Wiley Hibbard, Cook was airlifted to University Medical Center in Columbia, where he was pronounced dead.

Ralls County Coroner Denise Goodwin said an autopsy would be performed, though it is likely Cook died of head trauma.

Hibbard said the exact cause of the incident was not known, and that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration had been notified.
