The last of the original anchor stores in the Quincy Mall is closing.

Officials with Sears confirmed to area media outlets that its Sears store and Sears Auto Center in Quincy will close later this year.

The auto center will close in late May. The store is scheduled to close to the public in mid-August.

The store will begin its liquidation sale May 25th.

Sears officials say the closing is not just aimed at cost savings, but to continue a strategy to, “help bring Sears Holdings to a size and place to meet the realities of the changing retail world.”

Eligible employees affected by the closing will receive severance and be able to apply for open positions at other Sears or Kmart stores.

The nearest full size Sears stores are in Columbia, Chesterfield and St. Peters, Missouri and Springfield, Illinois.
