Police say a 25-year-old Springfield man who was on parole for a 2008 fatal shooting has been shot dead.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports Anthony Alves' death is the first homicide of the year in Illinois' capital city. Alves was pronounced dead at St. John's Hospital late Sunday night.

The Sangamon County Coroner's Office says he suffered several gunshot wounds. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

Springfield police arrested a suspect on Monday. Police say they found two handguns in the area near where the shooting occurred.

Alves was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2009 after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the shooting death of a man in an apartment complex parking lot.

The Illinois Department of Corrections says Alves was paroled in July.
