(St. Louis, Mo)--Brilliant pitching performances two days in a row have energized Cardinal fans and stifled the Colorado Rockies.

Adam Wainwright pitched 7 innings of no-hit ball Saturday before the streak ended in the 8th.

Combine that with Shelby Miller retiring 27 batters in a row Friday night-- only allowing a lead off hit in the first inning, and you have  49 consecutive Rockies batters hitless in two days!

The Associated Press says the 49 at-bats is the longest hitless stretch since a 50 at-bat streak against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981.

KHMO Sports Director Bill Shuler attended Saturday's game and captured this audio of Cards' manager Mike Matheny commenting on Wainwright's strong performance...

"We witnessed something pretty special, Wainwright had a very good outing, he had everything working... what a great couple of days here..."

AP Sports says Wainwright was motivated to pitch well following Shelby Miller's remarkable performance the night before...

"Once you see Shelby mow through a lineup like he has , you got to go out there and do that too, or you guys think there's a new Sheriff in town..."
