(MONTICELLO)—Lewis County Sheriff’s deputies say they’ve received several reports of attempted telephone scams throughout the county.

In one scam, the caller say the person has won unclaimed funds from Publisher’s Clearinghouse.

Another scam involves an area resident who posted items on Craigslist for sale. A scammer appeared to make a legitimate payment through Paypal but it was actually fraudulent. The victim believed the buyer had overpaid and sent over a thousand dollars back via Western Union.

A third scam involved an unsolicited call asking for Medicare information and the victim’s personal banking information.  .

Sheriff David Parrish reminds you to never give information over the phone unless you directly contacted the company or person yourself. Contact your bank or law enforcement if you are in any way concerned about a potential transaction.
