Illinois officials say organizations sponsoring fireworks displays for the Independence Day holiday should ensure the vendor presenting them has required state permission.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday that a fireworks presenter must have licenses and certificates issued both by that agency and the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

The Illinois Explosives Act is administered by IDNR's Office of Mines and Minerals' Explosives and Aggregate Division. The division is staffed by trained and experienced blasting specialists stationed in various parts of the state.

The Natural Resources Department has about 1,800 individuals license for use of explosives in Illinois — including 940 for display fireworks.

Having display fireworks without valid permits could mean prison time and a fine.
