While much attention has been focused on income taxes of late, the financial website WalletHub takes a deeper look into the tax trough.  WalletHub conducted an in-depth study to determine which states tax their residents most aggressively--in the form of property taxes, individual income taxes, and sales taxes — as a percentage of total personal income.

Analysts compared all 50 states across the three tax types to come up with the states with the highest total tax burden ( https://wallethub.com/edu/states-with-highest-lowest-tax-burden/20494/ ).

Illinois made the Top 10 List of states with the highest tax burden, coming in at No. 10, just ahead of No. 11 California.  The total state tax burden in Illinois is 10.19%.

New York had the dubious honor of placing first on the list, with a rate of 13.12 %.  Hawaii came in number two at 11.86%.

Missouri ranks 37th out of 50 states, with a total tax rate of 7.9 %.
