A rural Ralls County family is homeless as the result of a Friday evening house fire.

Hannibal Rural firefighters respond to a residential fire on Hydesburg Road about 6:45 p.m.

Fire officials found that a bathroom in the home had caught fire.

Hannibal Rural Assistant Chief Tim McClain said that crews had put out the fire, but that several explosions occurred while they were on the scene. About 6,000 gallons of water was used to get the blaze under control.

The state fire marshal has been called in to investigate, although it is suspected a space heater in the bathroom caused the fire.

The family got out all right, although two of the family dogs died in the fire.
