Work begins Monday on a project to make Palmyra Road safer for pedestrians.

Crews will begin constructing a sidewalk across the street from the north entrance to Hannibal Middle School, weather permitting. The sidewalk will be constructed in sections moving to the east.

Drivers on Palmyra Road will experience some detours around the construction area.  Work is expected to be complete in about 60 days

A Safe Routes to School grant will pay for much of the work. D and L Excavating was recently awarded a $245,000 contract to complete Phase 1 of the project.

The initial phase is expected to stop short of the original goal of reaching Riverview Park. Officials hope to complete that stretch in 2015.
