Three eastern Missouri neighbors are credited with quick thinking to rescue a black Labrador retriever that fell through ice into a pond.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the animal wandered onto ice on the pond, then fell in when the ice broke Thursday morning in St. Paul, near O'Fallon.

The pond was behind the home of Carl Hull, who didn't know the owner of the dog. Hull was awakened by a noise and noticed the dog swimming.

He got a ladder from the garage. Neighbors Keith Turnbull and Phil Auchly helped place the ladder on the ice. The dog swam to the ladder's rungs and the three were able to pull the dog to safety.

The dog, after being warmed, was in good condition.
