NAACP Supports Use of National Guard in Ferguson

The St. Louis County Chapter of the NAACP says it supports Governor Jay Nixon's decision to call in the National Guard in Ferguson, Missouri, where tensions remain high more than a week after a police officer killed 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Following another round of rioting in Ferguson Sunday night, Gov. Jay Nixon ordered the National Guard to the St. Louis suburb. NAACP chapter president Esther Haywood says a small group of people seeking to cause chaos are creating the problems, not peaceful protesters.

The NAACP also called for a formal apology from the city of Ferguson to Brown's family. It also wants the Justice Department to take over the entire investigation into Brown's death. And it is calling for citizen review boards for every police department in St. Louis County.
