MO Veto Session: Lawmakers Face Big Decisions in Veto Overrides

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri lawmakers are returning to the state Capitol and must decide whether to override any of Governor Jay Nixon's vetoes.

The Democratic governor vetoed about a dozen bills, but attention for a possible override has focused on measures dealing with health insurance and vehicle taxes. Lawmakers are meeting Wednesday, and a successful veto override requires a two-thirds vote in the House and Senate.

The health insurance measure would allow individuals, employers and insurers to cite a religious or moral exemption from mandatory insurance coverage for abortion, contraception and sterilization. The vehicle tax legislation is intended to reverse a state Supreme Court ruling that struck down local taxes on vehicles bought out of state or from individuals.
