(JEFFERSON CITY)--  A new law lets gives Missouri counties more authority to enact burn bans. It allows county commissioners to order burn bans with the approval of the state fire marshal.

Supporters say the measure gives counties more control over enforcing burn bans and is a matter of safety. People could still use most fireworks under the law.Violators could face a misdemeanor charge with a penalty up to a year in jail.

The law is among those taking effect August 28.
