Mark Twain Commemorative Coin Act Signed Into Law

(Washington D.C.) -- President Barack Obama signed the Mark Twain Commemorative Coin Act into law yesterday, which will benefit four Mark Twain sites including his boyhood home in Hannibal, Missouri.

The House of Representatives first passed the bill in April and the U.S. Senate passed the bill in November.

This act, now signed into law, requires the U.S. Mint to manufacture and sell a commemorative coin in 2016 to honor Mark Twain. Proceeds will benefit four primary Twain sites: The Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum in Hannibal, Missouri; The Mark Twain House & Museum in Hartford, Connecticut; the Center for Mark Twain Studies at Elmira College in Elmira, New York; and The Mark Twain Papers & Project at the University of California, Berkeley.

Cindy Lovell, executive director of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum, credited the bipartisan leadership that resulted in the passing of the bill.

We're grateful for the leadership and collaboration shown by Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer and Senators Roy Blunt and Claire McCaskill. This will have a significant impact on our work at the museum where we care for nine historic properties. It is legislation they can be proud of.
