Friday night was supposed to be a night that you would remember the rest of your life as the 39 members of the United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon were to be in Quincy, Illinois for one performance at Quincy Notre Dame High School. This event has been cancelled due to the lack of military transport.

The local coordinator, Matthew Courtney along with Dave Ulrich, have worked tirelessly in lining up sponsors and volunteers to make this event happen but reluctantly had to cancel the event.

If the chance ever comes around again, I suggest you take the opportunity to watch it. This Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon is a 24-man rifle platoon that performs a unique precision drill exhibition. This highly disciplined platoon exemplifies the professionalism associated with the United States Marine Corps.

The Silent Drill Platoon first performed in the Sunset Parades of 1948 and received such an overwhelming response that it soon became a regular part of the parades at Marine Barracks Washington, D.C.

These Marines are individually selected from the Schools of Infantry located in Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Camp Lejeune, N.C.  Hats off to The Marine Corps League, Gem City Detachment #790, for their efforts.  Perhaps it just paved the way for a future visit to our area.
