A sheriff says a man found dead outside a burning home in rural southwest Missouri had been shot.

KOLR-TV reports crews from several towns responded to the fire Tuesday in the Lawrence County community of Halltown.

Lawrence County Sheriff Brad Delay says the man's body was found in the yard with a gunshot wound in the chest. The man's name has not been released and it's not known if he lived at the property, where several outbuildings also burned.

The sheriff says a coroner will determine the cause of death.

The house and at least one of the outbuildings were destroyed. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
