A deal with the Washington Nationals will see Matt Adams don a Cardinal uniform again.

Today, the Nationals traded first baseman Matt Adams to the Cards for $50,000 cash. The Nats also traded second baseman Daniel Murphy to the Chicago Cubs for Class A infielder Andruw Monasterio and a player to be named, or cash.

AP Sports says the Nationals are essentially throwing in the towel on a disappointing season. The Nats are in third place,  7 1/2 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves in the NL East.

However, It will be interesting to watch how these moves affect the contenders in the NL Central: The Cards are in third place, but only 3 1/2 games separate them and the first-place Cubs. The Redbirds are only 1/2 game behind second place Milwaukee.

Adams was traded last year from the Cardinals to the Braves. He became a free agent after the season until he was picked up by the Nationals in December.
