The swollen river presented numerous challenges when a kayak turned over near Quincy Friday morning. The Quincy Herald-Whig reports the Tri-Township Water Rescue Team responded to the Quincy Bay after receiving a report of a kayaker in distress in the Mississippi.

The kayaker reportedly was wearing a life jacket and used his cellphone to summon help. He also had a rescue whistle that helped the Water Response Team locate him.

Emergency personnel say the kayaker was quite cold after being in the 51- degree water for nearly a half hour, but was in good spirits. Once on shore, the unidentified man was taken to an ambulance for further evaluation.
