Over the years, the Missouri State High School Activities Association has made decisions that left me shaking my head in disagreement. The decision in the late 1990s to allow football jamborees isn’t one of them.

The jamborees bring football teams together for a full contact (kicking game excepted) scrimmage the weekend before the regular season starts. A lot of high school coaches will tell you that the biggest week to week improvement used to come from week 1 to week 2 of the schedule.

Playing full speed against football players from other teams has a way of exposing things to coaches and, more importantly the players themselves that might stay hidden working against familiar teammates.

I’m looking forward to Friday night’s jamboree at Porter Stadium for simple professional reasons.  Hannibal, Palmyra, Highland, Bowling Green, Mark Twain and Clark County are this year’s participants in Hannibal.  For me, it’s a great chance to get in some early homework for the Hannibal, Palmyra and Highland broadcasts on KHMO and here on khmoradio.com.

Counting down the hours until 6 p-m Friday…
