Independence Girl, 17, Charged in Death of Baby

A 17-year-old girl has been charged in the death of a 6-week-old baby in Independence.

Jackson County prosecutors said in a news release Tuesday that the suspect has been charged with second-degree murder.

According to authorities, officers responded to a report of an infant who was not breathing at a residence on Sept. 16. Police say the baby was found unresponsive on the dining room table. Prosecutors say the suspect placed her hand over the baby's mouth until it died.

A bond of $100,000 has been requested by prosecutors.
