As students head back to school, Illinois State Police and local districts are reminding drivers to use extra caution in school zones.

Lieutenant Colonel Todd Kilby says school zone speed limits will be enforced, and motorists should watch for pedestrians as well as school buses with flashing lights.

Kirby says Illinois State Police officers will be increasing patrols to focus on school zones. They'll also be looking for people not wearing seatbelts or illegally using cellphones and other devices that lead to distracted driving.

Authorities say those violations can result in "hefty" fines and a suspended license.
