Illinois Bridge Collapses, Sends Freight Cars Into River

A railway bridge has collapsed in rural west-central Illinois, sending six freight cars into the Spoon River.

Lt. Doug Lafary of the Fulton County Sheriff's Office says the accident took place Monday afternoon in Seville. No one was injured.

The train was carrying corn syrup.

It was operated by the Keokuk Junction Railway, which runs between Keokuk, Iowa, and Peoria. The company did not immediately return a message seeking comment Tuesday.

Lafary says the eastbound train made it about halfway across the bridge when the structure collapsed.

Six of about 20 freight cars tumbled into the river. Lafary says no hazardous materials were involved.

He says the bridge was built in the 1890s and that the railroad told him it had been inspected in the last few months.
