Harrisburg Woman Dies in Wreck a Day After Her Marriage

A southern Illinois community is mourning an 18-year-old woman killed in a weekend vehicle wreck a day after she got married.

Illinois State Police say Machaela "Katie" Sherrod of Harrisburg died Sunday afternoon when the pickup truck she was driving left a road near Carrier Mills and overturned.

Her new husband, 22-year-old John Gould, was flown to an Indiana hospital for treatment. His medical status was not immediately known Tuesday, though relatives tell media outlets he is expected to recover.

The crash happened less than 24 hours after the couple married in a Harrisburg park.
