Hannibal Police say an officer with their department was assaulted on Sunday while investigating the theft of a stolen phone. 

According to a release from the Hannibal Police Department, an officer was investigating the theft report in the 1700 block of South Arch Street. The officer attempted to contact 18-year-old Breanna M. Sparks, who fit a description of the suspect. Sparks reportedly fled on foot and was pursued by the officer. Sparks is accused of striking the officer several times in an attempt to get away.

Sparks was arrested for theft, property damage, resisting arrest and assault on a law enforcement officer, and was placed on a 24-hour hold at the Marion County Jail.

Police says the officer received minor injuries and he did not require medical attention.
