The Hannibal School Board Wednesday expressed its opposition to a bill making its way through the Missouri House of Representatives.

The board passed a resolution of opposition to House Bill 634, also known as the charter school expansion bill.

The bill would allow charter schools to operate in any school district in the state. Right now there are charter schools only in the St. Louis and Kansas City areas.

Opponents of the bill say that charters are not subject to the same accountability as public schools.

Hannibal school district officials have met with local legislators in Jefferson City to express their concerns about the bill.
