Hannibal Police Release Statement on Accident at Steamboat Bend Shopping Center

Officers of the Hannibal Police Department were dispatched to the area of Steamboat Bend Shopping Center at 1:57 a.m. this morning for a report of a traffic accident.

According to officers reports a 2007 Chrysler PT cruiser was West on West Ely at a high rate of speed and attempted to turn into Steamboat Bend Shopping Center parking lot when the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck the building that houses Papa John's Pizza.

Witnesses in the area said that the driver and a passenger left the scene in another vehicle.

After conducting an investigation the driver was located and arrested at approximately 2:55am.

The driver is identified as Gary J Wiltermood 22, of Huntsville Illinois he was charged with Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident, Driving While Intoxicated, Reckless Driving and Resisting or Interfering with an arrest.

According to reports no injuries were reported with the driver but a passenger, a 25 year old Hannibal woman sought treatment by private car several hours after the accident at Hannibal Regional Hospital.
