Hannibal Police continue to investigate a flag burning incident that happened at Lover's Leap.

Assistant Parks and Rec Supervisor Mary Lynne Richards says vandals broke a lock securing the flag sometime Sunday night or Monday morning. The flag was then lowered and burned using some type of incendiary substance.

Richards says that officials are hoping for assistance from the public in capturing the person or persons responsible, "We're really hoping that someone brags about it. The police are investigating...we just hope people talk about it and they report to us or the police department what they know."

According to Richards, this is the first incident of this kind to happen at Lover's Leap, "We hope it's just a random act of vandalism. This is the first time this has happened up there... we hope that it is not going to happen again."

Richards says the flag has been replaced, at a cost of around $260.

Anyone with information should contact the Hannibal Police Department at 573-221-0987.
