Hannibal Police say 223 pounds of unused prescription drugs and over the counter medications are out of circulation thanks to a drug take back program.

The department’s ‘Bringing The Heat Initiative” started April 1st. Citizens are encouraged to drop off unwanted non-liquid medications free of charge between 8 a-m and 4 p-m weekdays at the Hannibal Police Department. Police Chief Lyndell Davis says the initiative helps combat abuse of prescription and over the counter medications that can lead to the use of street drugs such as heroin. Participation in drug take backs is encouraged rather than flushing medications down the toilet or sink. That can release toxins into the environment and affect drinking water and soil.
