The Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department has learned that it will be getting a federal grant to expand the walking trails in the Sodalis Nature Preserve.

Parks and Rec applied for a $37,500 Recreational Trails Program Grant back in February.

Along with a 20 percent match provided by the city, the funds will go toward Phase Three of the Bear Creek Trail Extension, expanding the trail through Sodalis to Patchen Street.

Officially, the money will be used for base material, asphalt, signage and benches along with new section of trail.

Work on the extension could start as early as late this year, and could be completed within a year.
