Some 161 low-income areas around the state of Missouri will benefit from the new Opportunity Zone program.

The program was created by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and provides tax deferrals to investors in those designated areas.

Hannibal is on the list of Opportunity Zones. Specifically, the zone falls in the southern part of the city, bounded by the Mississippi River, the Ralls County line, Route O and Broadway.

Other northeast Missouri communities named Opportunity Zones include Kirksville and Mexico.
