The Hannibal Hoots battled back in the late innings but fell short, losing 4-3 to the Terre Haute Rex Saturday night at Clemens Field.

The Rex opened the scoring in the third on a throwing error, a single and a sacrifice fly.

The Hoots answered in the fourth when third baseman Joe Roscetti and right fielder Dylan Dodd singled. First baseman Jordan Humphries bunted them to third, then center fielder Tye Thixton drove in Roscetti with a base hit..

Terre Haute added what would prove to be the winning run on a single, throwing error and a wild pitch in the seventh.

Roscetti was driven in by Thixton again in the eighth. Then in the ninth, a pinch homer by Stephen Haring made it a one run game. Shortstop Josh Lane then walked and stole second with one out, but was stranded when Rex reliever Connor Taylor struck out the next two Hoots hitters.

Hoots' starting pitcher Victor Gotay took the loss. With the defeat, Hannibal falls to 1-3, while Terre Haute remains undefeated at 4-0.

The Hoots travel to Danville to face the Dans at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. They are back home to face the Springfield Sliders at 6:35 p.m. Monday.
