An effort is underway to repair one of the few historic railroad depots remaining in Sangamon County.

The State Journal-Register reports the newly formed Chatham Railroad Museum Association is raising money to fix the roof and make other improvements to the Chatham Railroad Depot.

The village of Chatham owns the structure, which was built in 1902. But it doesn't have enough money in its budget to pay for the estimated $10,000 in repairs.

The group has raised about $5,000 so far from other events. On Oct. 4 it will hold Chatham Depot Day, a free event that will recreate the depot as it was when it opened as the Chicago & Alton Railroad Depot.

Lesa Blagburn, the association's secretary, says the day will include presentations on railroad history.
