The 5th Annual “Free” Frontier Settlement Day is this Saturday, September 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Log Cabin Village in Quinsippi Island Park, off of Bonansinga Drive in Quincy.

There will be food on grounds and also Kettle Corn. There are lots of children’s activities including “live” farm animals to see and pet, provided by the JWCC Ag program. Kids can create pioneer type crafts, write on slates, and see what school was like in the 1800’s. They can also participate in pioneer kids games & competitions at 12:30, 1:30, and 2:30, sponsored by the Quincy Park District.

The Ladies of the War of 1812 will conduct a Tea party at 1 p.m. and the soldiers of the War of 1812 will have a flag display and talk at 3. There will be demonstrations on Blacksmithing, Chinking (putting material between logs) at the Herleman Log Cabin, Rope Making, Candle Making, Bread Making, Chair Caning, Wool Spinning,Wool Penny Rug Making & Lye Soap Making.  Visitors can learn what Herbs were used in pioneer times, at the village herb garden and the Hull Log Cabin will be decorated with items used in the 1800’s.  For a specific schedule, go to www.logcabinvillagequincyil.com.

The Friends of the Log Cabins have created this free Frontier Settlement Day event, to encourage people to visit the Lincoln-era Log Cabin village to see these 1800’s historic structures built and lived in by early settlers to this area. The structures were moved to the island in the late 60’s early 70’s, to preserve them for future generations to as the entrance sign says, to “reflect a bit from whence we came”.

It is hoped that people will then get involved to help save these irreplaceable historic structures, before they are lost forever.

Preceding the Frontier Settlement Day activities, at 9 a.m. is the first annual “Walk for the Log Cabins” fundraising event. People can register the day of the event, at the Shelter House on Quinsippi Island. For a donation of $50, they will receive a souvenir T-Shirt. If they donate or raise over $100,  they will be entered into a raffle to win a used eZip 500 electric Scooter worth over $150. Registration and donation forms and information are available at www.logcabinvillagequincyil.com.  The “walk” goes from the Shelter House through the Marina past the old Indian Museum and Sky Ride buildings to the large Flag pole at the end of the island and then back to the Log Cabin Village – a total of about 1 and ½ miles round trip.

Forms can be picked up at Farm and Home, Emerald City Jewelers, the Quincy Herald Whig, WGEM-TV, the Quincy Park District Offices or downloaded from their web site www.quincyparkdistrict.com.
