(Hannibal)--A US flag of special significance traveled halfway around the world to be presented to the Hannibal City Council.

The atmosphere of the council chambers turned emotional Tuesday evening as Wendell and Mary Glance of Hannibal read a letter a letter from their daughter, Dr. Shayna Glance Thompson. The story of a flag burning incident at Lover’s Leap had caught the attention of the Hannibal native, though she was thousands of miles away. Thompson is a Major in the US Army and  serves as the base surgeon for the US Army’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division in Zabul Province, Afghanistan.

Major Thompson expressed her concern to her Base Commander, who decided it was fitting to answer the desecration of a flag by dedicating one to the City that was proudly flown over the Base for a month.

Mary Glance reads a letter from her daughter, Major Shayna Thompson, to Mayor Hark:

Wendell Glance reads the Certificate of Dedication signed by the Base Commanders:

Wendell and Mary Glance present the flag to Mayor Roy Hark:

A salute to Major Shayna Thompson and troops of Forward Operating Base Apache in Zabul, Afghanistan, for answering a senseless act of vandalism with a meaningful act of patriotrism!
