An apparent lightning strike destroys a historic church in Clark County Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters from Wayland, Alexandria and Kahoka responded to a report of a fire at the Old Stone Church in St. Francisville, Missouri about 4 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses say lightning struck the roof of the church, starting the fire.

Some items were salvaged from the church, but there was extensive damage to the roof and siding of the structure.

The Old Stone Church is the oldest recorded structure in Clark County, dating back to 1853.

The state fire marshal will investigate to confirm the cause of the fire.
