Frigid temperatures made the job of firefighting even more challenging Friday.

(HANNIBAL)--Crews from Hannibal Rural and New London Fire responded to the Twin Acres subdivision off Ralls County Route HH shortly before 11 a.m. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and fire in the kitchen and attic.

Cold temperatures resulted in slick conditions from freezing water. The cold also increased the difficulty of keeping water flowing.

No one was home when the fire broke out. The cause is believed to be accidental-- the homeowner told officials he believed something was left on the cookstove.

The home sustained damage to the attic and kitchen, and smoke and water damage throughout, but is not believed to be a total loss. No injuries were reported.
