A former major league baseball all-star who overcame struggles with drinking and drug addiction is the featured speaker at Hannibal-LaGrange University’s annual booster banquet this fall.

In a press release, HLGU announces that Darryl Strawberry will be the keynote speaker at the school’s 75th Booster Banquet Friday, November 11th.

Strawberry was a major leaguer for 17 years, hitting 335 home runs for the Mets, Yankees, Dodgers and Giants. He was Rookie of the Year in 1983, and eight-time all-star and was a part of four world championship teams.

On the flip side, Strawberry was also suspended three times by Major League Baseball for drug abuse.

These days, Strawberry is an ordained Christian minister, bringing a message of hope through the gospel.

Tickets for HLGU’s Booster Banquet go on sale September 1st.
