Charges in a fatal stabbing along I 72 in Pike County early Saturday morning are upgraded to first degree murder.

The Pike County State’s Attorney’s office says 28-year-old Joseph Coffman of Ft. McDowell Arizona is expected in court at 9:30 today.

Investigators believe Coffman and the victim, 47-year-old Dennis Coffman, of Petersburg, Illinois, were driving from Hannibal to Illinois when the stabbing occurred. Authorities were called to the area around exit 1 in Pike County shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday.

Dennis Coffman was pronounced dead at Hannibal Regional Hospital of injuries received in the altercation.
