MILWAUKEE (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals had to play extra innings but ended up giving themselves a little daylight in the competitive NL Central.

Carlos Beltran beat the Milwaukee Brewers with a 10th inning sacrifice fly. The Cardinals now hold a two-game lead over Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, who are tied for the Wild Card.

DETROIT (AP) - For Max Scherzer, the fifth time was the charm. The Detroit Tigers ace finally won his major league-leading 20th game on his fifth attempt, beating the Chicago White Sox in a 12-5 game. Scherzer has had two losses and two no decisions in his previous four starts. The Tigers are closing in on another AL Central crown.

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Cubs gave up four runs with two outs in the ninth inning, and the Atlanta Braves moved to within one win of clinching the NL East. Chris Johnson went 3 for 4 with a homer in the 9-5 Atlanta victory. Freddie Freeman added a three-run homer. Kevin Gregg lost his fifth game for the Cubs.

BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Red Sox clinched the AL East title on Friday night, getting seven strong innings from Jon Lester to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 and eliminate Tampa Bay from the division race. Lester improved to 15-8 for his 100th career victory.

PITTSBURGH (AP)- The Cincinnati Reds scored three in the ninth and won it on Joey Votto's opposite field home run in the 10th inning to squeak out a 6-5 win over Pittsburgh. That moves the Reds into a second-place tie with the Pirates behind NL Central-leading St. Louis.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A bases loaded walk has given the Kansas City Royals a win over the Texas Rangers in a critical game for AL Wild Card positioning. Alcides Escobar walked home the winning run after Neftali Feliz couldn't find the strike zone. The Royals gained a game on Texas with the 2-1 victory.

NEW YORK (AP) - Alex Rodriguez set a major league record with his 24th career grand slam, passing Lou Gehrig with a tiebreaking shot in the seventh inning that sent the New York Yankees to a 5-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants last night. Rodriguez's slam helped CC Sabathia beat Tim Lincecum (LINZ'-ih-kuhm) in a matchup of former Cy Young Award winners having subpar seasons.
