A car has crashed into a townhome in northern Illinois, rupturing a gas line and setting off an explosion that engulfed the home in flames.

The crash took place early Friday morning in the village of Hainesville.

Grayslake Police chief Philip Perlini tells WBBM radio that the family of three living at the home was able to escape unharmed.

Several nearby homes were also evacuated.

It was not immediately clear if the driver of the vehicle was able to escape.
