Highway 61 in Hannibal was shut down for a time after an accident around 1:30 pm Wednesday.

Hannibal Police report a bicyclist was struck by a car on US 61 near the Dairy Queen . Police say a 21 year-old New London man was riding his bicycle north along the east side of the southbound lanes, due to no shoulder.  Witnesses told police the bicyclist veered into traffic and was struck by a southbound Honda Civic traveling in the outside lane.

A helicopter was called in to transport the injured bicyclist to University Hospital in Columbia. Traffic was blocked in order to allow the chopper to land cross ways in the middle of the highway. Around 2:10, it lifted off and police began reopening the lanes of US 61 to traffic.

Injury information and names of those involved was not released by Hannibal Police. The accident remains under investigation.
