Bond has been increased in the case of a LaGrange man charged with child abuse.

In Lewis County Circuit Court Tuesday, Judge Fred Westhoff first denied the motion to reduce the bond for 34 year old Marcus Mays, then increased Mays’ bond to a million dollars.

Mays is charged with abuse or neglect of a child, endangering the welfare of a child involving drugs and possession of a controlled substance.

Mays is alleged to become angry with a two year old girl in his care August 17th, striking her with the back of his hand numerous times.

The child was taken to Blessing Hospital and then to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where she died.

A preliminary autopsy report shows that the child died from injuries suffered as a result of actions of the defendant.

Mays’ next court date is October 1st. He remains in the Lewis County Jail.
