A defense attorney for a northern Illinois woman accused of starving her infant son says the death was tragic but it was not murder.

Twenty-five-year-old Kayla Lund of South Beloit is charged with first-degree murder in the September 2011 death of her 7-week-old son, Jackson Betts.

Her attorney, Assistant Public Defender Nick Zimmerman, said Monday at the start of her bench trial in Rockford that "nobody mourns Jackson's death more than Kayla does."

He said Lund reduced the amount of formula she fed her son but increased the number of feedings after he began vomiting his formula in the weeks before his death.

The Rockford Register Starreports that Winnebago County Assistant State's Attorney Marilyn Hite Ross told the court no medical attention was ever sought.
