(Hannibal, MO) The American Heart Association is inviting anyone to come participate in the 2012 Northeast Missouri Heart Walk that will be held on September 22, 2012.  The Heart Walk helps to educate area residents of the risk factors of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, and what we can do to prevent it.  Co-chairs, Dr. Mark and Lynn Shima invite the people of Hannibal and surrounding communities to take part in the Northeast Missouri Heart Walk on September 22, 2012 at the Hannibal Medical Campus.   Registration for the Heart Walk is free and will begin at 9:00am and the walk will begin at 10:30am.

Co-chairs of the 2012 Northeast Missouri Heart Walk, Dr. Mark and Lynn Shima have set a goal of $40,000 to be raised this year.  With community member’s help, they are confident this goal can be met.  “Our commitment to the American Heart Association is more than simply fund raising,” said Dr. Mark and Lynn Shima, co-chairs of the Heart Walk. “We are encouraging each of you to embrace an overall healthier lifestyle to improve cardiovascular health.”

The Heart Walk is one of the American Heart Association’s premier fundraisers, providing an opportunity for people to improve their health through walking while helping to fund the fight against heart disease and stroke. There are currently more than 450 Heart Walks held each year in cities nationwide.

The 2012 Northeast Missouri Heart Walk is set for September 22, 2012. The event will draw approximately 300 community members and representatives from local businesses. The Heart Walk educates people from the Northeast Missouri area about the risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases and stroke, and what each of us can do to prevent it.

Funds raised through the Heart Walk support the educational programs of the American Heart Association, along with lifesaving medical research. Over the past five years alone, the American Heart Association has invested more than $24 million in 178 medical studies at 11 Missouri research institutions.
